Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Hor Namhong held talks here this morning with newly-appointed Representative of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to Cambodia H.E. Ms. Wan-Hea Lee.
During the meeting, H.E. Hor Namhong expressed the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC)’s wish to have a human rights report, which is based on truth and not only on information from media or civil society organizations alone, H.E. Koy Kuong, Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation told reporters after the talks.
Currently, there are thousands of NGOs and civil society organizations in Cambodia, and hundreds of them have been working in the field of human rights, he added.
The presence of these NGOs and civil society organizations as well as that of the OHCHR in Cambodia reflected clearly theRGC’s commitment to protect and promote the respect of human rights in the country, stressed H.E. Hor Namhong.
The Cambodian top diplomat asked the OHCHR to further cooperate with the National Human Rights Committee of Cambodia to improve the human rights sector in the Kingdom, and to send its observers for the upcoming national election, the spokesperson said.
For his part, H.E. Ms. Wan-Hea Lee said she was delighted with her new mission in Cambodia and she lauded the good cooperation between the OHCHR and the RGC so far.
Ms. Wan-Hea Lee also affirmed that the OHCHR will continue to work closely with the RGC in the protection and promotion of human rights respect.
