18 HOS/G of ASEAN and Dialogue Partners Join the ASEAN Global Dialogue

The ASEAN Global Dialogue, the first ever summit initiated by Cambodia, was held here this morning at the Peace Palace under the chairmanship of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia and Chair of ASEAN.

In his opening remarks, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said the establishment of ASEAN Community will play a core role in creating a cooperation framework and integration for the East Asian region as a whole.

The first important step of the ASEAN Community Building is to achieve the ASEAN Economic Community by 2015, which will form a regional labor market with a total of some 700 million people in total, he said.

“In this regard, if we can build a broader ASEAN Community, the East Asian cooperation will be in blossom, and the entire East Asia will become a strong regional economic area, which will boost the economic development, poverty reduction, people’s living standard in each country in the region,” he said.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen went on to say that this global dialogue is a high level forum to exchange views over important issues including the ASEAN’s role in contributing to dealing with those issues.

ASEAN also expects to receive opinions and comments from the development partners on the ASEAN Community Building process in the context of current global economy, added the Cambodian premier.

The ASEAN Global Dialogue was attended by 18 leaders of ASEAN and dialogue partner countries as well as heads of international institutions, including International Monetary Fund, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, World Trade Organization, and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.
