An estimated 100,000 Cambodian people from all walks of life yesterday evening gathered in front of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh for the last day of the official mourning for King-Father Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk.

Some 10,000 Buddhist monks from different pagodas across the country chanted and prayed for the soul of the Late King-Father, the father of independence, territorial integrity, and national unity.

His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni and Her Majesty Queen-Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk also joined the crowded mourners for the final day of official mourning.

The week-long official mourning period for the King-Father began on Oct. 17 when his body returned home after he passed away in the early morning of Oct. 15 in Beijing, China at the age of 90.

The King-Father’s body will be lying in state at the Royal Palace for at least three months before being cremated.

Leaders of friendly countries have subsequently sent condolence letters and traveled to Cambodia to pay their last respects to the Cambodian revered former King.
