Cambodian Premier Receives Chinese State Councilor

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen met here this morning at the Peace Palace with Chinese State Councilor H.E. Dai Bingguo.

In the meeting, H.E. Dai Bingguo expressed his high honor for having escorted the coffin of King-Father Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk from Beijing, China to Cambodia, H.E. Ieng Sophalet, Assistant to the Cambodian premier told reporters.

H.E. Dai Bingguo said King-Father is an old and honest friend of China, therefore the Chinese leaders paid high attention to his death, said the assistant.

H.E. Dai Bingguo also expressed his surprise to see so many people line up along the road sides from Phnom Penh International Airport to the Royal Palace to receive the King-Father’s body. This shows clearly the Cambodian people’s love and respect to King-Father, he stressed.

The visiting Chinese state councilor was convinced that the Cambodian people will work together to bring more development and prosperity to Cambodia even though King-Father passed away and China will also continue to cooperate with Cambodia.

“Over 1 billion Chinese people will stand along with over 15 million Cambodian people to boost more cooperation and development,” said H.E. Dai Bingguo.

In reply, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed his profound thanks to the Chinese leaders for their assistance in bringing the King-Father’s body home.

The Cambodian prime minister further thanked the Chinese people and government for the development assistance to Cambodia.

King-Father Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk passed away on Oct. 15 at 01:20 am in Beijing at the age of 90 from natural causes.

Cambodia is holding the official mourning period for King-Father from Oct. 17 to 23. National flags must be flying at 1/3 below the top of the mast across the country during the mourning period, while all entertainments are prohibited.

The King-Father’s body will be kept at the Royal Palace for at least three months before being cremated. During this period, civil servants, citizens and foreign friends can pay their last respects to King-Father.

Cambodia has successively received letters of condolence from many leaders around the world as well as heads of international institutions.
