PM Presides Over National Fish Day

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen yesterday presided over the 10th National Fish Day at Rokar Khnol commune, Krouch Chmar district of Kampong Cham province.

Addressing the event, Samdech Techo Hun Sen called on fishermen not to fish during the prohibited fishing season from July to October and use illegal fishing devices.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen also encouraged the local people to practice fish breeding to reduce fishing from the natural habitats and promote fish production in the country.

On the occasion, Samdech Techo Hun Sen released some 600,000 baby fish and shrimps at Boeung Thom, a main local water reservoir in Rokar Khnol commune.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries’ report, Cambodia has in total 280 fish nurseries and more than 700 fishing raising ponds.

In 2011, fish raising produced some 72,000 tons of fish, an increase by 20 percent if compared to 2010.

The National Fish Day, began in 2003, is aimed at increasing fish population throughout the country.
