Uruguay Supports Cambodia’s Candidacy as UNSC Non-Permanent Member

The first ever Ambassador of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, H.E. Gerardo Prato affirmed his country’s support to Cambodia’s candidacy as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

H.E. Koy Kuong, Spokesperson for the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation told reporters here yesterday after the meeting between Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Hor Namhong and H.E. Gerardo Prato.

The ambassador of Uruguay further proposed the Cambodian side for a visa exemption for official and diplomatic passports between the both countries and a cooperation in the agricultural field, said the spokesperson.

For his part, H.E. Hor Namhong, also Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, warmly welcomed H.E. Gerardo Prato’s diplomatic mission to Cambodia, through which, he said, the relationship and cooperation between the two countries will be further strengthened.

He also thanked Uruguay for its support to Cambodia’s candidacy as a UNSC non-permanent member for 2013-2014.

The Cambodian foreign minister expressed Cambodia’s support to Uruguay’s candidacy as a UNSC non-permanent member for 2016-2017 and its candidacy as Chair of the UN Human Rights Council for 2013-2016.

Cambodia will consider Uruguay’s request for its support to Uruguay’s candidacy as Secretary General of the Universal Postal Union.

The Kingdom of Cambodia and the Oriental Republic of Uruguay have established their diplomatic relations since 1994.

The Oriental Republic of Uruguay is a country in the southeastern part of South America with some 3.3 million people.
